WHAT IS COUNSELLING?

What is counselling?

Beginning counselling can feel like a big step.

Many people come to their first session unsure of what to expect. Some worry they'll be judged. Others wonder if they'll know what to say. Many simply hope to feel a little less overwhelmed.

Counselling is a confidential space where you can pause, reflect and explore your thoughts, emotions and experiences with someone whose role is to listen carefully, ask thoughtful questions and support you without judgement.

It isn't about having all the answers.

It's about creating the time and space to discover them.

What happens during counselling?

Every person is different, so no two counselling journeys are exactly the same.

During our sessions, we'll explore whatever feels most important to you. That might be something happening in your life today, a relationship that's causing distress, or experiences from many years ago that continue to influence how you think, feel and respond.

Sometimes counselling brings immediate relief simply because you're finally able to say things out loud. At other times, it can involve gently exploring difficult emotions, long-held beliefs or familiar patterns that no longer seem to serve you.

There is no expectation to share anything before you're ready.

We work at a pace that feels safe and manageable for you.

My approach to counselling

I work as an integrative counsellor, which means I draw upon different evidence-based approaches depending on your individual needs rather than following a single method with every client.

My work is particularly informed by attachment theory, trauma-informed practice and compassionate approaches to emotional wellbeing.

Rather than asking, "What's wrong with you?", I'm often more interested in understanding what has happened throughout your life and how those experiences may have shaped the way you relate to yourself and others today.

Many of the ways we cope with life make sense when we understand the experiences that gave rise to them.

Counselling offers an opportunity to explore those patterns with curiosity instead of judgement, creating space for greater self-understanding and lasting change.

What counselling isn't

There are many misconceptions about counselling.

Counselling isn't about someone telling you how to live your life.

It isn't about being criticised, analysed or judged.

It isn't about pretending everything is positive or trying to "fix" you.

Instead, counselling is a collaborative conversation.

Together, we seek to better understand your experiences, recognise the patterns that may be keeping you stuck, and explore new ways of responding with greater awareness and self-compassion.

Taking the first step

Reaching out for counselling can feel daunting.

You don't need to have everything worked out before making contact.

If you're looking for a BACP Registered Counsellor in Magherafelt or online across Northern Ireland, you're welcome to get in touch for an initial appointment.

Sometimes the most important conversation is simply the first one.

What can counselling help with?

People seek counselling for many different reasons.

You might be experiencing:

  • Anxiety and excessive worry

  • Depression or low mood

  • Stress and burnout

  • Trauma or difficult life experiences

  • Grief and bereavement

  • Low self-esteem and shame

  • Relationship difficulties

  • Life transitions

  • Loss of confidence

  • Feeling stuck or disconnecteD

Sometimes there isn't one specific problem.

Sometimes there's simply a growing sense that life feels harder than it used to.

That is enough reason to seek support.
